“Saskatchewan Premier Pushes for Canola Market Access”

Published:

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe held discussions with Prime Minister Mark Carney and leaders in the canola industry in Ottawa to address global trade disputes and China’s tariffs on canola. Moe characterized the meeting as constructive and educational, emphasizing the importance of advocating for increased market access for Saskatchewan’s canola and other exports on the international stage. Expressing concerns about the uncertainty in global trade, Moe highlighted the need for collaborative efforts between the provincial and federal governments to safeguard Canada’s interests.

During a recent trip to China, Moe led a delegation to advocate for Canadian canola amidst the 76 percent tariff imposed by China in response to Canada’s tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles. When questioned about the possibility of dropping tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, Moe emphasized the complexity of the situation and stressed the importance of finding a resolution beneficial for all of Canada. Carney commended Moe’s contributions to pivotal discussions during trade disputes, underscoring their significance in advancing negotiations.

The day’s agenda included a cabinet meeting led by Carney followed by discussions with Moe and representatives from the canola industry. The meeting was attended by Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Heath MacDonald, Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu, Secretary of State for Rural Development Buckley Belanger, and Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister Kody Blois. Moe and Blois previously engaged with Chinese officials overseeing tariffs on Canadian canola and other key industry stakeholders during their visit to China.

In response to Canada’s tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminum, China has imposed a 100 percent tariff on Canadian canola oil, meal, peas, and additional duties on pork and select seafood products. Concurrently, Carney is gearing up to visit Mexico to strengthen ties with the country as a vital trading partner, focusing on discussions with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum covering security, infrastructure, investment, energy, and trade.
