American rapper Wiz Khalifa has been sentenced to nine months in jail by a Romanian court for drug possession, following an incident at a music festival in the country over a year ago. Khalifa was detained by Romanian authorities in July 2024 for allegedly smoking cannabis during a performance at the Beach, Please! Festival in Costinesti, situated in Constanta County. Prosecutors stated that Khalifa, whose real name is Cameron Jibril Thomaz, was caught with over 18 grams of cannabis and was seen using it on stage.
The Constanta Court of Appeal issued the verdict after Khalifa was found guilty of “possession of dangerous drugs, without authorization, for personal use,” as reported by Romania’s national news agency, Agerpres. The ruling is final. Previously, a lower court in Constanta County had imposed a criminal fine of 3,600 lei (approximately $1,140 Cdn) on Khalifa for “unlawful possession of dangerous drugs.” However, prosecutors challenged this decision and sought a more severe punishment.
Romania enforces strict drug laws, with possession of cannabis for personal use being a criminal offense that can lead to imprisonment ranging from three months to two years, or a monetary penalty. It remains uncertain whether Romanian authorities will request Khalifa’s extradition, given his American citizenship and lack of residency in Romania.
The 38-year-old rapper from Pittsburgh gained fame with his acclaimed mixtape “Kush + Orange Juice.” During his performance in Romania last year, Khalifa was seen smoking a large hand-rolled cigarette while performing his popular track “Young, Wild & Free.”
