Israel Shuts Allenby Crossing Indefinitely

Published:

Israel has announced the indefinite closure of the solo crossing connecting the Israeli-occupied West Bank and Jordan, a decision made just days after its recent reopening following a tragic incident that claimed the lives of two Israeli soldiers.

The Allenby Crossing, overseen by Israeli authorities, will be shut down starting Wednesday morning as directed by the political leadership, with no specific reasons provided for the closure. This move was anticipated, as both Palestinian and Jordanian authorities had earlier indicated Israel’s intention to close the border.

The Allenby Crossing serves as a crucial entry point for many Palestinians in the West Bank to travel internationally and facilitates the transportation of goods between Jordan and the West Bank. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office remained silent on the matter during a public holiday, redirecting inquiries to the military.

This decision aligns with Netanyahu’s recent statement regarding the government’s forthcoming response to countries recognizing a Palestinian state upon his return from the United States. Countries like Canada, France, Britain, and Australia are among those recognizing Palestine this week in hopes of revitalizing the two-state solution.

In response to the recent shooting incident where a Jordanian truck driver killed two Israeli soldiers, Israel had temporarily shut down the Allenby Crossing, which was fully reopened on Monday before the current closure announcement.

Additionally, a United Nations report released on Tuesday highlighted Israel’s efforts to establish permanent control over Gaza and ensure a Jewish majority in the occupied West Bank. The report details systematic demolition of civilian infrastructure in Gaza and Israeli policies indicating intent to forcibly transfer Palestinians, expand settlements, and annex the entire West Bank, which has been met with criticism and dismissal by Israeli authorities.

The report also addresses the impact of Israeli military operations in various Palestinian areas, leading to destruction of homes and infrastructure, displacement of residents, and accusations of international crimes against several Israeli ministers. The report, to be presented to the UN General Assembly in October, accuses Israeli actions of inflicting conditions calculated to destroy Palestinians in Gaza, which Israel vehemently denies.

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza has resulted in significant casualties and humanitarian crises, with conflicting reports on the extent of the damage and loss of life.
