However, the process hit a snag when Windsor’s mayor decided to pause any discussions about a sister city agreement due to the impact of American tariffs on the manufacturing sector.
Windsor City Councillor Angelo Marignani, who heads the city’s international relations committee, plays a key role in evaluating requests for city twinning. Marignani highlighted the potential economic and cultural benefits of such agreements, citing examples like the LG-Stellantis plant, which stemmed from previous sister city connections.
The upcoming $5-billion NextStar Energy battery plant in Windsor is expected to create 2,500 direct jobs once operational, emphasizing the economic significance of international partnerships.
Arlington Mayor Jim Ross expressed his disapproval of the tariffs affecting Windsor and emphasized his commitment to building a strong partnership with the Canadian city. He made it clear that while he respects the U.S. President’s office, he disagrees with the tariffs imposed.
