Manitoba Premier Criticizes Minister’s Social Media Post

Published:

Manitoba’s premier expressed concerns over a cabinet minister reposting critical comments about U.S. conservative figure Charlie Kirk shortly after he was shot but confirmed that she would retain her cabinet position.

Families Minister Nahanni Fontaine shared a message from @che_jim, an Indigenous activist based in the U.S., on her Instagram page for several hours before removing it. The post described Kirk as a “racist, xenophobic, transphobic, Islamophobic” individual promoting hate.

Premier Wab Kinew stated that he had a discussion with Fontaine upon learning about the post and requested her to issue an apology. Kinew emphasized the importance of maintaining openness, dialogue, and reducing tensions in such situations.

The incident occurred following the shooting of Kirk, 31, while addressing a crowd at Utah Valley University, where he tragically lost his life. Kirk was known for engaging in debates on various topics, including immigration and abortion. Reports indicated that the shooting took place during a discussion on gun violence.

Kinew condemned the killing as deeply disturbing and conveyed condolences to Kirk’s family. Fontaine’s repost came the following day, prompting her to issue an apology for sharing a post related to Kirk’s murder, emphasizing the need for civil discourse and empathy even towards those with differing views.

This incident marks the second time Fontaine has apologized in recent months, with a previous instance involving a controversy over sharing a stage with a sign-language interpreter. Despite these situations, Kinew expressed his confidence in Fontaine and rejected the notion of “cancel culture,” emphasizing the importance of guiding individuals through their mistakes.

Political studies professor Christopher Adams highlighted the significance of Fontaine’s actions overshadowing the government’s announcement regarding funding for the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. He stressed the need for Fontaine to exercise more caution and discernment in her responses to avoid similar controversies in the future.

Adams pointed out that while Fontaine advocates for vulnerable groups and Indigenous rights, her decision to repost a message lacking empathy towards Kirk’s death displayed poor judgment. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a strategic and cautious approach in social media interactions, especially in delicate situations involving tragic events.

In conclusion, while Fontaine has been consistent in her advocacy for marginalized communities, her recent actions have raised concerns about exercising better judgment and discretion in her public communications. The incident serves as a reminder of the impact of social media interactions on public perception and the need for thoughtful engagement in sensitive matters.
