Canada Unchanged for Epic Semi-final Clash vs. New Zealand

Published:

Canada’s head coach, Kevin Rouet, has announced an unaltered lineup for the upcoming semi-final clash against reigning champions New Zealand at the Women’s Rugby World Cup in England. The Canadian team, ranked second, will face off against the third-ranked Black Ferns at Ashton Gate Stadium in Bristol. The top-ranked England and fourth-ranked France will compete in the second semi-final on Saturday at the same venue.

Canada secured their spot in the semi-finals by defeating Australia 46-5 in the quarterfinals after dominating Pool B with victories over Fiji (65-7), Wales (42-0), and Scotland (40-19). Rouet expressed confidence in his team’s readiness for the crucial match, emphasizing the progress made towards their ultimate goal.

In a historic victory earlier this year, Canada ended a 17-game losing streak against New Zealand with a 22-19 win in Christchurch. This triumph propelled Canada to the second spot in the world rankings, surpassing New Zealand. The teams had previously drawn 27-27 in the Pacific Four Series, with New Zealand clinching the title on points difference.

Notably, veteran flanker Karen Paquin, leading the team with 57 tackles, will earn her 50th cap for Canada, while prop DaLeaka Menin, with 41 tackles, will achieve her 68th cap, moving into second place on Canada’s all-time cap list for women.

Adding to the excitement, Canadian music icons Shania Twain and The Tragically Hip have shown support for the team ahead of the crucial match. Twain’s endorsement on social media and the band’s collaboration with Rugby Canada’s fundraising campaign have boosted team morale.

The semi-final outcomes will not only determine the finalists but also impact the world rankings. Canada could potentially rise to the top spot if certain scenarios unfold, while England risks losing their No. 1 ranking. New Zealand, the six-time world champions, will look to maintain their position in the rankings amidst fierce competition.
