The 2026 Golden Globes nominations were announced in Beverly Hills, California, with “One Battle After Another” leading in the film category and “The White Lotus” and “Adolescence” receiving multiple nominations in the TV categories.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another” emerged as the top contender with nine nominations, including best score, best supporting male actor, best screenplay, and best director. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, the film tells the story of an ex-revolutionary in hiding with his daughter and has garnered critical acclaim with high ratings on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic.
Following closely behind was “Sentimental Value” with eight nominations, including best motion picture and acting nods for Elle Fanning, Stellan Skarsgård, Renate Reinsve, among others. “Hamnet” also secured six nominations for its score, acting performances, and storyline.
The action-horror film “Sinners” has been a massive success critically and commercially, earning seven nominations, including best cinematic achievement and best motion picture, as well as recognition for Michael B. Jordan’s dual performance in the movie.
The nominations reflect the success of these films at various shows and festivals this year. “Sinners” led the Critics’ Choice Awards with 17 nominations, while “Hamnet” won the 2025 People’s Choice Award at TIFF, often a precursor to Oscar recognition.
On the television front, “The White Lotus” dominated with six nominations, featuring roles by Walton Goggins, Carrie Coon, and Jason Isaacs. The Netflix series “Adolescence” also received multiple nominations, with actors Owen Cooper and Stephen Graham contending for awards.
Canadian talent also shone with Catherine O’Hara and Martin Short receiving nominations for their roles in TV series. Additionally, Seth Rogen’s show “KPop Demon Hunters” earned three nominations.
Amidst these nominations, Hollywood witnessed significant developments as Netflix announced plans to acquire Warner Bros. for $72 billion, a move challenged by Paramount with a $108 billion hostile bid.
Both Netflix and Warner Bros. had strong contenders in the race, with Netflix boasting 35 nominations while Warner Bros. secured 31. Paramount’s sole nominee was “Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning” for best cinematic and box office achievement.
The upcoming Golden Globes ceremony will introduce a new award category for podcasts, recognizing diverse talents in the medium and underscoring the event’s dedication to honoring entertainment across the spectrum.
The Golden Globes have faced criticism in the past for lack of diversity and ethical issues. Following the restructuring of the voting body and a change in broadcasting, the awards show is set to return on January 11th for its 83rd edition, hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser for the second consecutive year.
Notable nominees across various categories include Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein,” Jafar Panahi’s “It Was Just an Accident,” and inaugural podcast nominees like “Armchair Expert With Dax Shepard” and “Call Her Daddy.”
The Golden Globes are navigating a new era with a broader voting body and a revamped image, aiming to celebrate excellence in entertainment across different platforms.
